BWD Guide 1: Magmaw

07/06/2011 13:08

Magmaw is one of the first two available encounters in Blackwing Descent raid instance. He is stationary worm sitting on its place near a ground scar. His two phases are repeatable until the end of encounter. All values are for Normal 10 men mode.

Phase 1:

Magmaw casts three spells though the phase one. First two are pure damage spells which have to be healed through, last is specific.

  • Magma Spit: 1,5s CD instant cast, Magmaw uses this spell all the time. It deals 30.625 - 39.375 fire damage to random single target. Important fact is, that if nobody stands in melee range, Magmaw will go frenzy getting buff inreasing Magma Spit damage by 100% which stacks up to 10 times.
  • Lava Spew: Instant cast without CD deals 18.500 - 21.500 fire damage AoE spell hiting most of the raid.
  • Pillar of Flame: Magmaw hurls a big magma ball on random ranged (or sometimes melee) target and it sunders the ground around target. It deals 24.375 - 25.625 fire damage but it also kicks in the air and deals massive fall damage to everyone who stay in the sundered ground. That means all near the pillar have to move away. Second thing is, that pillar will spawn several of Lava Parasites.. We have to kill them pretty fast, Pillar of Flame is near 30 sec CD.

Lava Parasite: These little worm-like bastards with 116.235hp are NOT immune to CC - so stun, sleep, freeze, fear, slow them. Their bite deals also very unpleasant debuff - Parasitic Infection (cant be dispelled, 10s duration and it deals 12.025 - 13.975 damage every 2 sec). When debuff ends, it triggers Infectious Vomit (24.375 - 25.625 fire damage to all targets in 8 yard radius and also spawns even more parasites directly from infected target and this means BIG TROUBLES.

Phase one is ended with Mangle ability: Mangle deals massive 110.464 - 128.377 physical damage every 2 seconds. Tan can heal himself or attack magmaw while mangled. Few seconds after Mangle, Magmaw will cast Ignition - half of the room will be covered by steam, all have to move away from it.

Phase 2:

Magmaw, who still mangle the tank, will do move forward and crash with his head and body to ground dealing Massive Crash. All have to be away from front cone of Magmaw, otherwise Massive Crash deals 101.750 - 118.250 physical damage and also stuns target for 3 sec.

Now Mangle can be interrupted. Magmaw will be rideable and green "jum up" arrow will appear on your mouse cursor if you will move it over Magmaw. 2 melee players have to jump up as soon as possible. They et new ability called Crushing Chain (it appears on the first button of your main action bar) and both of them have to use this ability targeting the big spike on the ground with green AoE circle cursor and they have to do this at once.

This whole process means right mouse button click on Magmaw to jump up, pressing key 1 (or other according to your action bar shortcuts) targeting the green circle on spike and left click with mouse.

When Magmaw is chained, tank will be released from Mangle, but gets Sweltering Armor debuff. This debuff decreases tanks armor by 50% for next 90sec - if tank is not good equiped, raid will need two tanks for swap after each Mangle. Chained Magmaw changes himself into Exposed Head of Magmaw and wont move, attack and to top it, he gets debuff Point of Vulnerability. Time for offensive cooldowns.

Tactics:

There are three camps: first one is tank only, second are melees and third ranged. Tank starts on right side of Magmaw, melees on the left. Ranged stand near middle of the room. When Pillar appears, all ranged dpsers target and kill parasites together with kiting them - you really have to avoid beeing bited and getting infection. Dont forget that you have only 30 secs to kill them until new will spawn.

Melees dpsing Magmaw have to move to the opposite side of Magmaw if Pillar/Ignition appears on their spot. 2 of them who are strictly marked before the encounter jump up the boss and chain him during Mangle phase. Also dont forget to move away from central cone of boss during mangle - otherwise Massive Crash will tear you up.
